In the lead-up to this year’s LUMINOUS Lantern Parade, Serve the City Brisbane is coming together to create the lanterns we will proudly carry through South Bank — and we’d love you to be part of it! 💛
Join the Serve the City Brisbane team and our volunteer community for a hands-on Lantern Making Workshop, where we will create meaningful paper lanterns together ahead of parade night.
Each lantern will represent one of the projects and communities we serve across Brisbane: from sharing breakfast and conversation with people experiencing homelessness, to welcoming newly arrived communities, caring for our environment, supporting young people, and creating moments of connection for people who may otherwise feel unseen.
Together, these lanterns will carry the stories, hopes and purpose behind our work. On 31 July, we will walk side by side as a Serve the City Brisbane team, representing those we serve in Brisbane and those who we serve alongside — bringing light, colour and a shared message that everyone deserves to feel welcomed, seen and part of the city around them.
No craft experience needed — just an hour of your time, a willingness to create something meaningful, and the chance to meet new people before walking together in the parade.

About the Lantern Parade
Serve the City Brisbane is walking in this year’s LUMINOUS Lantern Parade in Southbank Parklands, run by Multicultural Australia to kick off Queensland Multicultural Month! Together, we will carry lanterns through South Bank alongside thousands of people, celebrating the cultures and community connections that make our city what it is.
As a community and team that serves with and alongside multicultural communities, this walk matters to us. Through projects such as the Skills for Change workshop at the Romero Center, collaborations with St James College and many other multicultural community initiatives, we work to create spaces where people from diverse backgrounds – including people seeking safety – can connect, contribute and feel they belong. We will be walking in solidarity with refugees and multicultural communities, because welcoming communities are built when we show up for one another.
And what about the Lanterns? Before the parade, our hand-made lanterns will be made together with people from refugee and multicultural communities connected to the projects we serve. Each lantern will carry more than light – it will reflect the stories, hopes and heritage of the people we serve alongside, and a shared message: every person deserves to feel welcomed, seen and part of the community around them.
