🐝 Contributing to our Community – Northey Street City Farm – Winter Solstice Festival 2026

16 Victoria St, Windsor, Brisbane QLD 4030

Come volunteer with Serve the City as we take part in the incredible community work of Northey Street City Farm – one of Brisbane’s longest-standing grassroots spaces for sustainability, community connection, environmental education, and urban regeneration.

For decades, Northey Street City Farm has created a space where people can reconnect with nature, learn sustainable living practices, grow food, share knowledge, and build stronger local communities. More than just a festival venue, this city farm is a living example of what community-led environmental care and social connection can look like in the heart of a city.

At Serve the City, we believe stronger communities are built when people actively show up for the places and organisations that create belonging, inclusion, education, and care for both people and the environment. Being part of local community spaces like Northey Street City Farm means being part of the long-term wellbeing, resilience, and connectedness of our city through moments of moments of connection, celebration, and shared purpose – because community is built through showing up for one another and creating community spaces where we can connect.

🌾 The project

To contribute as a Serve the City Brisbane volunteer team to their incredible community and sustainability work , Serve the City Brisbane is joining forces with Northey Street City Farm to contribute to the 2026 Winter Solstice Festival – helping create the warm, welcoming atmosphere that brings thousands of people together each year on Jagera and Turrbal land to celebrate community, sustainability, and the return of longer days.

This year’s theme, ‘Return to the Light’, is a celebration of coming together to create warmth and connection in the darkest part of the year – through music, markets, workshops, bonfire, lantern parade, kids’ activities, and performances from local artists.

As volunteers, we’ll work alongside the Northey Street City Farm community to help bring this festival to life – from setting up marquees and signage, to welcoming guests at the gate, guiding visitors around the farm, helping the event operate as zero-waste, and getting creative with decorations in the lead-up. It’s hands-on, it’s community-driven, and it’s a chance to be part of something that’s been bringing the Brisbane community together for over 30 years.

🌾More about the community festival

The Winter Solstice Festival is Northey Street City Farm’s biggest annual celebration – a gathering rooted in the principles of permaculture, sustainability, and community care. Each year, the festival draws thousands of visitors to the farm for an evening of live music, fire performances, organic food markets, sustainability workshops, a lantern parade, and the iconic bonfire.

The farm itself is a community treasure – a working urban farm and education centre that has been fostering connection between people and the land since the early 1990s. By volunteering at the festival, you’re not just helping run an event – you’re contributing to a community space that strengthens social connection, environmental awareness, and belonging across Brisbane’s northside.

At Serve the City, we believe small acts of contribution matter. Sometimes volunteering means building something with your hands, sometimes it means helping someone find their way, and sometimes it simply means being part of the community that shows up. ✨

🌿Volunteer Roles Available

As a Serve the City volunteer at the Winter Solstice Festival there are a variety of roles available:

  • Bump In & Bump Out – Help set up before and pack down after the festival — marquees, signage, stalls and staging.

  • Front of House / Box Office – Welcome guests, scan tickets and be the friendly first point of contact.

  • Wayfinding & Visitor Experience – Guide visitors around the farm, answer questions and help everyone find their way.

  • Decorations Team (Pre-Festival) – Get creative in the lead-up — painting signs, making lanterns, and decorating the farm.
